Eco Savvy launch Zero Waste Cafe
Wednesday 9th March saw the launch of the new Zero Waste Cafe initiative from Eco Savvy.
The event took place in St Molios Church Hall in Shiskine. Tea, coffee, flapjack and some warming lentil soup was on the go to heat up the brave souls that fought through the wind and rain to get there.
The shop section allows people to fill up their own containers from zero waste dispensers which currently stock red lentils, broth mix, white rice, macaroni, oats and white flour. All these products are from the UK/Scotland, aside from the pasta which is from Italy.
Local produce is also available and this time there was kale and cabbages from Clachaig Farm, as well as some beautiful mixed kale donated by a Lamlash local. The veg offering will change with the seasons and aims to support local growers to get their produce out into the local community and help people reduce their food miles.
Surplus tinned goods left over from the Covid response were provided by NAC and the hall has a new freezer which was filled with food from the Eco Savvy and Co-op Food Share partnership.
In addition, the Zero Waste Cafe makes use of Eco Savvy’s new electric van to transport the goods and equipment meaning that even the transport is as environmentally friendly as possible.
The purpose of the Zero Waste Cafe is to help get more local, seasonal, affordable produce to people, support local growers, reduce food waste and packaging, reduce the need for travel, help the environment and celebrate food and community. It has been made possible through funding and support from Inspiring Scotland, North Ayrshire Council and the National Lottery.
Sustainable food coordinator, Jess Wallace, said “The first Zero Waste Cafe was a great success and it was wonderful to see so many folk there! We look forward to the project growing and facilitating the increased availability of local produce, reduced packaging and supporting people in making sustainable food choices. Thank you to our lovely volunteers who helped run the cafe and to all who came”
