October walks

Here are details of a few autumnal walks taking place over the next few weeks, two with the Arran Geopark and one with the Arran Ranger Service:

Monday 10th October 2022

Gaelic Landscape Walk – North Glen Sannox with Arran Geopark

A beautiful walk alongside pools and waterfalls to reach the foothills beneath the Sleeping Warrior, north Arran’s most iconic ridgeline!

About this event

Walk length: 4.5 km / 2.75 miles
Approx. duration: 3.5 hours
Terrain: uneven, occasionally muddy footpath, following burn steadily uphill (then back downhill again!) beyond the limit of the forestry. Waterproofs are essential; please wear walking boots; and don’t forget food/drinks – we’ll be stopping for a srùbag!
Meeting place: North Glen Sannox car park (large car park at the foot of the Boguillie, at North Sannox Bridge)

Wednesday 12th October

Red deer rut hill walk with the NTS Arran Rangers

Experience one of nature’s great spectacles, the red deer rut, in the atmospheric autumnal moorland setting of Arran’s northend.
Join the local NTS rangers in search of rutting red deer stags and other moorland wildlife, and experience the sights, sounds and smells of autumn in the wilds of Arran. Guided by a Mountain Leader from the NTS Arran Ranger Service, the walk will take place in a little-frequented area in the northend of Arran, with great views of the northern mountains and across the Clyde.

???????: Rough, pathless, in places boggy; some gentle ascents & descents. Surefootedness and some walking fitness required due to nature of terrain.
?????? ????/?????: Suitable outdoor clothing including walking boots with good ankle support and grip, waterproof jacket and trousers, spare layers, hat and gloves; any personal medication; packed lunch, snacks and water; NO JEANS please!

Please note that we have a “?? ????” policy on our guided walks and activities. On this walk especially, chances of seeing wildlife would be much reduced with dogs present.

Saturday, 15th October 2022

Gaelic Landscape Walk – Loch Iorsa with Arran Geopark

Following it as far as Loch Iorsa, this is the perfect glen for an autumn walk, with lots of Gaelic history to be uncovered along the way.

About this event

Walk length: 7 km / 4.5 miles
Approx. duration: 3.5 hours
Terrain: steps, slippy vegetated path, and otherwise a wide estate track, with a ford which must be crossed twice (this is an out-and-back walk). Waterproofs are essential; please wear sturdy walking boots with gaiters or grippy wellies (there is a ford which must be crossed both on the way there and the way back!); and don’t forget food/drinks – we’ll be stopping for a srùbag!
Meeting place: Layby just north of Dougarie Boat House.
