Apple Pressing Workshop
Join Arran Eco Savvy and the Arran Pioneer Project for this lovely annual event!
On Tuesday 15th September from 2 – 6 pm at the Ormidale Pavilion in Brodick.
Bring your own apples along to press into juice, using their two presses. The Zero Waste Cafe will also be there, offering apple themed baking, and sharing some great apple recipes to help you make the most of this abundant seasonal fruit!
The Arran Pioneer Project tells us a little bit about Arran’s long history with apples:
The Isle of Arran has long been associated with “Eamhain Ablach” – the Isle of Apples (or “realm of apples”) referred to in legend and myth. In the old Irish tales it’s the island of Manannán mac Lir, where the apples are “not fruit from an earthly tree but the honey-tasted apples of the land of perpetual youth.” according to the book of Arran (1914).
Apple trees are ubiquitous to those of us who grew up here – traditionally planted in back gardens and small orchards as a staple crop. There are records of apple trees going back centuries.
To continue the tradition, we’ve helped plant dozens of trees at various places since 2021 to try and increase supply and determine which varieties are most productive and resilient to any change in climate.
