Joni Keen & Dan Brown, at 4 pm, playing a mix of songs from both of Joni’s albums along with a fresh look at some of her favourite songs from The American Song Book. Joni has released two albums signed to Circular Records Edinburgh, her second album “Ella, Oscar and Me” is a fresh look at some timeless classic and is often heard on BBC radio programmes and led to her sell-out show at Edinburgh Fringe festival. Her haunting melodic vocals are iconic and along with anecdotes & beautiful music she is considered as one of the best female jazz artists in Scotland, we have a treasure who lives on our own soil of Arran.
Joni works with the finest musicians in the UK and Dan Brown is a fine young musician who started piano at a young age, studying classically. It was his mid-teens when he first developed an interest in jazz and went on to study under the wings of Tommy Smith and Paul Harrison at the prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Since graduating, Dan has collaborated with some of Scotland’s finest musicians along with his own Jazz trio at Celtic Connections. As well as his performing portfolio, Dan is in much demand as a teacher and runs his own Jazz & traditional Scottish Music crossover project “Dreaming of White Horses”.
Ali Affleck and Joplin Parnell, 7.30pm “Welcome To New Orleans“
Two young masters of the early jazz, hokum and prohibition era blues genre will transport you to the heat and fun of the southern states. This will be a lively evening combining supremely high musicality with lots of informative chat on the songs and as both Ali and Joplin are American citizens, it will be as authentic a New Orleans experience that you can expect to experience this side of the pond!
Ali Affleck, the highly acclaimed ‘Jazz Vocalist of the Year ‘ in the prestigious Scottish Jazz Awards 2014, has a beautiful, and hugely powerful voice with the vocal styling of a young Billie Holliday she constantly draws comparisons to the Jazz divas from the halcyon days of the 20s and 30s when style and elegance mattered as much as the music.
“Ali is Scotland’s bonafide Queen of Vintage Jazz and Blues – she means every word she sings! With such raw emotion in a performance you immediately feel engaged in the most intimate conversation shared by the most well-travelled soul”
Accompanied by Joplin Parnell – outstanding young New Orleans style pianist, Joplin is a prominent musician on London’s jazz scene whose life was immersed in music at an early age following his piano playing father around New Orleans bars and jam sessions with snare drum in hand. He weaves a rich tapestry of New Orleans rhythm & blues, New York stride and French musette imparting a deep soulful sensibility into all he plays. It will be a very high energy and fun performance with Joplin onboard.
