‘Bad Girls’ in Brodick Hall

by Jean Bowden

They say ‘Variety is the spice of life’, and this certainly is the motto of the Arran Music and Drama Club. Ever since their original formation as the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in 1975, they have provided exactly that, with musicals ranging from G&S, The Merry Widow, Showboat etc to more modern popular shows such as South Pacific, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music and Fiddler on the Roof. The club then tackled some more controversial productions such as Jack the Ripper and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas – both great fun to perform.

The original choice for this year was to have been Steven Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, but this was replaced in January by a show better suited to the company because of its mostly female cast – Bad Girls! Based on the popular TV series set in a women’s prison, Bad Girls has very catchy songs as well as some highly dramatic scenes. There are lots of laughs, too, provided by some hilarious characters, all perfectly chosen for these roles, making an extra-special music, sure to deliver a huge impact. It’s a show with a difference, not to be missed, so make a note of the dates – May 30th to June 4th. Watch out for tickets going on sale soon.

To help offset the costs of this production, the Arran Music and Drama Club are holding two “Book Sales with Coffee” on Saturday 14th May and Saturday 21st May bewteen 11am & 2pm in Brodick Hall.
