The Torchlight Challenge
Ben Lomond/Ben Lawers/Goat Fell, Saturday 27 April 2019, Registration Fee: £15
The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) is holding its popular Torchlight Challenge at the end of the month. The event was due to take place last September, but had to be called off due to bad weather. Here’s what NTS say about the upcoming walk:
Our ever-popular Torchlight Challenge is a unique opportunity to enjoy some of Scotland’s mountains at dusk and raise essential funds for the National Trust for Scotland and our local mountain rescue teams. Reaching the summit in time for nightfall, your group will light the beacon and torches, uniting all our Torchlight Challenge walkers across Scotland.
This time we have challenges taking place on three of our mountains: Ben Lomond, Ben Lawers and Goat Fell. From the summit of each you’ll be able to spot the lights shining from the other hills, creating a truly magical experience.
Last time we had over 150 walkers take part at Goat Fell and Ben Lomond. Participant Christopher Major enjoyed the trek saying, “This walk was so special, a unique chance to walk up a mountain range in the dark knowing you’re in the safe hands of the mountain guides and rescue teams. When we reached the summit and saw the lights shining on Goat Fell all the way over on Arran, it made the hair on my arms stand up.”
Registration costs £15 and includes a bespoke Torchlight Challenge t-shirt, refreshments and a guide for the night. We ask a minimum sponsorship of £50 to be raised by every participant to help the National Trust for Scotland care for the mountains and to support our local mountain rescue teams.
Alasdair Eckersall, Senior Ranger at Ben Lomond said, “I would encourage any keen hill walkers after a unique and magical experience to get involved in this event. Whether you’re a serious hill walker or just enjoy being out in the Scottish landscapes, we can support you in a safe and fun way to reach the top and help us light our beacons.”
After having to cancel the initial date for the challenge in September 2018 due to severe weather conditions, our new scheduled date is in April 2019. If you had previously booked for September 2018 then your registration fee and any associated fundraising will be transferred to this date and we do hope you can take part.
