A review of Mara, contributed by Heather Gough
Recently opened in Corrie, to the delight of locals and visitors alike, Mara is a seafood restaurant and delicatessen with a difference. Run by Kirsty and Gordon Decaestecker, assisted by Sophia Perry, it offers delicious and unusual seafood as a coffee and lunchtime spot.
Local girl, Kirsty Logan met Gordon whilst working in Glasgow and they married in 2016. Gordon had been working as a chef all over Scotland for 15 years including for No 1 Devonshire Gardens and Mark Greenaway, more recently, with brother – in -law, David Brand, at the Black Grouse in Blackwaterfoot.
Both Kirsty and Gordon love seafood and Arran and, when the “Rock Pool” in Corrie became available, they realised there was an opportunity to create an eco friendly eating place in an ideal location – Kirsty and Gordon live in Corrie and Mara is so well placed for passing marine life, including Marvin Elliott’s famous seal! The location provides Kirsty and Gordon with the opportunity to maintain a healthy work/life balance after years of very unsociable hours. They are, in fact, living the dream.
The food is delicious and original – all fish and seafood – and all sustainable served in take-away compostable containers. Mara opens from 9.30 – 5.00 pm Tuesdays to Saturdays and 10.00 – 4.00 on a Sunday. (Closed Mondays)
If you haven’t been you are really missing out on a great Arran culinary experience.
